How to Ethically “Steal” Other People’s Content and Marketing Ideas for Your Camp’s Benefit

Posted on November 16, 2022

If you know me, you know I’m always on the lookout for new marketing and content creation ideas. Didn’t take long before I learned one of the best ways to find these is “stealing” them from other industries and organizations, then figuring out a way to tweak and use them for my camp’s benefit.

I’ll tell you what I mean.

When I started my camp in 1999, Southwest Airlines was offering a “Friends Fly Free” promotion (which they’re also doing now with their “Companion Pass” program).

I “stole” that idea and applied it to camp, offering a “bring a friend to camp for free” marketing tactic which helped me generate lots marketing buzz, free press, and word-of-mouth referrals. The results were dramatic. It was the catalyst that helped me break into the market among a sea of established competitive camp programs and hit the ground running.

You can do this too. Keep your eyes open to other organizations’ marketing tactics you find inspirational. Then ethically (no plagiarism, copyright infringement, etc.) steal them, in other words, tailor them to fit your camp’s marketing plan for your benefit.

It will pay off for you, no doubt.
